    ハンディなサイズですが、内容の充実ぶりを確認しました。本書の編著は出光美術館です。

    以前出光美術館を訪れた時に、仙厓の作品と出会って驚いたのを覚えています。その時以来、何を我々に伝えたかったのだろうという疑問はずっと持ち続けていますし、本書を読んでもその思いはなかなか払拭できませんでした。それほど捉えることの難しい禅画です。

    本書の丁寧な編集より、その仙厓の紹介をつぶさに作品とともに追いかけ、代表作を提示して、その魅力を見る人に伝えるという上質の編集内容にあると思っています。解説の詳しさもまた本書の質を担保していました。

    冒頭の「〇△□」に魅入ります。「最も有名、最も難解な仙厓の作品」とあるように、禅問答そのもののようなモティーフが描かれていました。他の作品もそうですが、飄々とした作風の中に世の中の道理が詰まっています。教えを見事に絵画表現で表していました。

    「出光美術館と仙厓(198p)」で紹介されているように、これだけの素晴らしい作品を集めたのは出光佐三さんでした。日本の石油王であり、膨大な仙厓コレクションで有名なコレクターでもあります。詳しくは本書をお読みください。

    その中で「佐三は、折に触れて、仙厓を社員たちへの訓示」とされ、実際の事業の中で生かされたようです。名経営者は蒐集家としての情熱を、自ら牽引したエネルギー事情への思いへと昇華させていったわけです。そのコレクションへの思いもまた事業熱とリンクしていたと思われました。

    他の解説もそうですが、捉えるのが難しい仙厓に少しでも近づく契機になると思われます。本書の出版はその意味でも多くの人に仙厓の魅力を身近に感じ取ってもらえるようにしたことにあると思いました。
