A Morning Walk Towards New,Old & Retro Kanayamachi

I visited Kanayamachi early in the morning, before any shops opened or old buildings for tourists welcomed visitors. The weather was clear and refreshing. Because it was still early, the streets were quiet, with only a few locals preparing for the day—some sweeping in front of their houses, others heading out to work.

    So quiet and beautiful

As I strolled along, I imagined what this town might have been like in the Edo period: surely it must have been filled with the sounds of metal casting, merchants calling, and children running in the streets.

    Senbon-gōshi and Stone Pavements

What struck me first were the townhouses with senbon-gōshi (thousands of narrow wooden lattices) that lined the streets. These lattices create a play of light and shadow that changes with the time of day, giving the street a living rhythm. Beneath my feet stretched the stone-paved road, adding a soft echo to each step.

Because it was early, I could take my time admiring every detail of the wooden structures—without worrying about people appearing in my photos.

    Retro Stone and Brick Architecture

In addition to Edo-period wooden townhouses, Kanayamachi also preserves retro stone and brick buildings from the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods. Some display elements of Art Deco style, with elegant facades and Western influence, harmonizing with the traditional townscape.

Walking past them in the soft morning light, I felt as if I were traveling between different centuries with every step.

A Town Where History Still Lives

Unlike towns preserved only for tourism, Kanayamachi is still very much alive. Behind the lattices, people prepare breakfast, water their plants, or leave for work. This blend of everyday life and centuries-old tradition makes the district unique.

    Personal Note|

That early morning stroll through Kanayamachi felt like opening a window to another time—quiet, dignified, yet alive with everyday routines. It reminded me that history isn’t only found in museums, but also in streets where people still sweep, work, and live as they always have.
