Coffee Shop Practice
Coffee Shop Practice
We all experienced this: there’s too many notes to learn and too little time left to go. Out of that desperation, I came up with this technique. And I still go back to it whenever the pile gets too high. Leave the instrument behind, go to your favorite coffee shop, and get to work. Don’t forget to pack the music, a metronome (or an app on your phone), a pair of headphones, and a pencil.
Once you're settled in with your favorite beverage and something sweet, here's what to do.
Set the metronome at a reasonable practice tempo. Mentally practice whatever you're working on. Hear yourself play the music as vividly as possible, including every note and expression.
Even in mental practice, you'll know when you've made a mistake. Slow down and work on it, mentally. Notice when, where, and how you're holding tension in your body. Figure out what's bothering you, work through possible solutions, and write them down.
By not having your instrument in hand, you disengage from the tension built up in sore muscles, and the metronome keeps your response to the music realistic and practical. Often we can't play a passage cleanly not because we're physically incapable, but because we can't track every note in time — a failure of mental agility, not technique.
Also, research has shown that sugar does wonders for a tired brain. A fresh perspective, away from the instrument, is where new solutions tend to show up — and it turns out this is also a terrific way to memorize music. If this ever works for you, however, you owe me a cup of coffee and a treat.
