STATICE
Order: Caryophyllales
Family: Plumbaginaceae
Genus: Limonium
An annual herb native to the coastal regions of the
Mediterranean.
Statice is a flower known not only for its beautiful
colors but also for its durability as a dried flower.
It is widely used in cut flower arrangements,
bouquets, and wreaths.
In Japanese, it is called “Hamahanasaji”, which
translates to “flower beach spoon.” The name
refers to the spoon-shaped flowers that bloom
along Mediterranean coastlines.
What appears to be the flower in statice is actually
its calyx, while the actual petals are delicate and
soft, and tend to fall off easily. The calyx, which
plays the leading role, comes in a rich variety of
vivid colors such as red, pink, violet, purple, blue,
white, and yellow. These calyxes have a slightly
fluorescent quality and are resistant to fading.
They are also surprisingly tough, almost
resembling hard plastic in texture.
At a restaurant I visited in the past, statice dried
flowers in various colors were displayed
throughout the interior, and I was struck anew by
the sheer range of their hues.
Because the calyx contains little moisture to
begin with, it retains its color even when dried.
This makes statice an ideal flower for natural
drying and easy transformation into dried flower
arrangements. As a result, it is a popular choice
for interior décor, swags, and wreaths.
The flower’s meanings reflect the enduring color
and resilience of its calyx, symbolizing sentiments
such as “unchanging heart for eternity” and
“unbroken friendship.”
