What is AnnoBoost? A Local Desktop App for Reducing YOLO/COCO Annotation Work
Hello.
On this account, we will introduce AnnoBoost, a desktop app developed to reduce the amount of manual work required for image annotation.
We will share its basic features, how to use it, and the development process behind it.
Since this is our first article, we would like to start by explaining what AnnoBoost is and what kind of value it aims to provide.
Why We Built AnnoBoost
The developer behind AnnoBoost has used YOLO-based computer vision models many times during school and work.
Through those experiences, one problem became clear again and again:
creating the dataset often takes more effort than building the model itself.
Drawing bounding boxes and assigning labels to thousands or tens of thousands of images takes a huge amount of time.
It is not only time-consuming, but also mentally tiring. It puts stress on concentration, wrists, fingers, and eyes.
We wanted to make this labeling process lighter.
AnnoBoost was developed to solve that problem.
What is AnnoBoost?
AnnoBoost is a local desktop app designed to reduce annotation work for YOLO/COCO datasets.
It is not a tool that aims to remove human work completely.
Instead, AnnoBoost starts from a small set of manually labeled images and connects the workflow from training, to auto-label suggestions, to human review, and finally to export.
The goal is practical workload reduction, not full automation.
Basic Workflow
The basic AnnoBoost workflow is as follows.
Select a small number of images from the full image dataset
Manually create bounding box labels for those selected images
Augment the labeled data
Convert the data into a dataset format
Train a model using the augmented dataset
Use the trained model to suggest labels for the remaining images
Review and correct the auto-label results manually
Export the final dataset in formats such as YOLO or COCO
With this workflow, users do not need to manually label every image from start to finish.
In the developer’s test environment, this workflow showed the potential to reduce annotation work by up to about 70%.
When the original dataset is large, or when training is run with heavier parameters overnight, AnnoBoost can also help make better use of time when the user is not actively working.
What AnnoBoost Aims For
AnnoBoost does not aim for full automation.
In image annotation, human review is still important.
Auto-label results need to be checked and corrected before they can become reliable training data.
That is why AnnoBoost focuses on reducing manual work while keeping human review in the workflow.
The goal is not to let AI do everything.
The goal is to help people spend less time on repetitive labeling work and more time improving their datasets.
In future articles, we will introduce AnnoBoost’s basic usage, features, improvements under development, and practical annotation workflows.
Try AnnoBoost with a Trial
AnnoBoost is currently available to try through a Trial.
If you are creating YOLO/COCO datasets or spending a lot of time on bounding box annotation, please try it and see how it fits your workflow.
AnnoBoost is still being improved, so feedback is very welcome.
We would like to hear things such as:
how it worked in your annotation workflow
what was easy or difficult to understand
what features you would like to see next
what kind of datasets you want to use it with
