Afterword of the Tides
The sound of waves
once distant
has quietly stilled at my feet
The pull of the red moon
that once drove me forward
loosens its grip, little by little,
setting me free
It is less like the stillness after a storm
and more like the moment
you slowly finish writing
the final line of a long letter—
that faint, stinging hush
There were times
I turned my back on it,
calling it a nuisance
I flung the excess heat outward
and wore myself down
through those seasons
But now,
even the ebbing and returning pain
I can fold inward
as a part of myself
I want to call this
not “aging,”
but “deepening,”
because within this stillness
stands the clearest version of me
I have ever known
Beyond the window,
a season is lowering its curtain
With a quiet farewell
seeping into my fingertips,
I remain,
standing at the threshold
Between a fading light
and a newly kindled, gentle shadow
Within that pale in-between,
for now,
I only wish
to let myself quietly rest
