The Bowl That Saved Our Family on a Night in Dazaifu
— What Sukesan Udon Taught Me About the Place Japanese People Return To —
Several years ago, my family traveled to Fukuoka to buy a good-luck charm for my eldest son’s junior high school entrance exams.
Our destination was Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
Because our flight arrived in the evening, we planned to have a simple dinner near our hotel.
However, driving a rental car in an unfamiliar city turned out to be much more challenging than we had expected.
We got lost.
The children were exhausted.
And everyone was reaching their limit with hunger.
“We need to find something to eat right now.”
Just as I started to feel anxious, we spotted a Sukesan Udon restaurant.
I had already heard about it from a writer on one of my favorite news websites, who often described it as a must-visit local treasure in Fukuoka.
I had always wanted to try it someday, but I never imagined our first visit would happen under these circumstances.
The moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by the comforting aroma of dashi broth.
The tension and fatigue that had filled our car slowly began to melt away.
I ordered nabeyaki udon.
My wife and eldest son chose goboten udon with crispy burdock tempura.
The children eagerly slurped their noodles, and my wife smiled and said, “This is really good.”
On our way out, we bought some ohagi to take back to the hotel.
Even now, I vividly remember the children happily eating them in our room that night.
What stayed with me was not just the taste of the food.
It was the feeling of relief.
In an unfamiliar place, when our family was tired, hungry, and overwhelmed, a warm bowl of udon welcomed us and made us feel at home.
That is why Sukesan Udon is more than just a restaurant chain to me.
It has become part of our family’s memories.
⸻
Recently, I finally visited Sukesan Udon again after its first stores opened in the Kansai region.
For months, I had given up because of the long lines.
This time, I was able to visit when things had settled down.
The noodles seemed slightly firmer than I remembered from Kyushu.
Yet the aroma of the broth and the flavor of the goboten were exactly as I remembered.
With the first bite, I was transported back to that night in Dazaifu.
Although years had passed, it did not feel like returning to a restaurant.
It felt like coming home.
⸻
Udon is different from ramen.
It is different from soba.
Japan has many noodle traditions, but udon may be the only one that people can enjoy comfortably throughout every stage of life.
At shopping mall food courts and theme parks, parents confidently choose udon for their children.
People eat it when they are feeling unwell.
Even when chewing becomes difficult with age, udon remains accessible.
Toddlers and retirees can sit at the same table and enjoy the same meal.
Udon quietly accompanies us through every chapter of life.
And yet, strangely, it is not a flashy food.
It lacks the bold personality of ramen and the refined image of soba.
It rarely becomes a social media sensation.
Still, chains like Sukesan Udon and Marugame Seimen continue to attract long lines.
Why?
As I looked around the restaurant that day, I think I found the answer.
Even on a weekday afternoon, there were many retired couples dining together.
Each of them probably carries their own memories.
A quick meal after work.
Lunch after raising children.
A stop during a family trip.
Udon is not reserved for special occasions.
It quietly stands beside us at life’s turning points.
People do not go out for udon simply to eat.
They go to reconnect with a feeling of comfort.
That is why people continue to line up, even for large restaurant chains.
⸻
A Sentence for the Future
People do not line up for udon simply because it tastes good.
They line up to revisit the comforting memories they left behind somewhere along the journey of life.
