"Women Save Over It, Men Save As" 女は上書き保存 男は名前をつけて保存するんだって!

It’s often said that the way women and men store memories of their past partners can be compared to "saving over" versus "saving as." Is this really true? Who knows, but the brain has its tricks—it sometimes paints the past in a prettier light or conveniently forgets unpleasant moments (or at least pretends to).

A friend of mine recently went through a divorce after a period of separation. It must have been a decision she agonized over, but in the end, it was undeniably her choice to put the final stamp on those divorce papers.

Yet, a few years later, she started saying things like: "I never wanted to get divorced, but my relatives and everyone around me were telling me I had to, so I had no choice. Right? Isn’t that how it happened?”

Though she had once chosen separation and then divorce herself, she began to regret her decision, rewriting the story of what happened.

The memories she speaks of now don’t seem like they’ve been “saved over” or “saved as.” Instead, it feels as if her mind is creating a protective narrative—a sort of defense mechanism to avoid deep hurt or to stop old wounds from reopening.

But I don’t think it’s necessary to let her mind deceive her. Instead of regretting the divorce, wouldn’t it be better to embrace the freedom she’s won through it, and believe that her current situation is the best for her?

When she thinks that way, she can move forward and walk confidently towards the future.
