【英語で】歴史上の人物
Q：歴史上の人物は何という？
A：historical figureです。
-icで終わる形容詞、-icalで終わる形容詞たくさんあって、どっち使ってもOKで単にどちらかの形が普通というだけのものも多いのですが、意味の違いがあって使い分けないといけない語もまぁまぁあります。これまでに
classic/classical
economic/economical
electric/electrical
のペアの違いを見てきました。
今日は４組目、historic/historicalについて見てみましょう。
まずはhistoricの定義は以下の通り。
famous or important in history, or potentially so
歴史的に有名な、歴史上に重要な、もしくはそうなる可能性がある
This is a historic moment.
これは歴史的瞬間だ。
This area has a lot of historic buildings.
このエリアには歴史的（に重要・有名）な建物がたくさんあります。
の様に用いられます。
一方 historicalの方は以下の様な意味を持っています。
of or concerning history or past events
歴史上の、歴史や過去の出来事に関する
Murasakishikibu is one of the most well-known historical figures from the Heian period.
紫式部は平安時代の最も有名な歴史上の人物の一人である。
Tom likes reading Japanese historical novels. I heard one of his favorites is Musashi, written by Eiji Yoshikawa.
トムは日本の歴史小説読むのが好きで、お気に入りは吉川英治の武蔵なんだって。
