「おい、A!

A(64)とS(74)の掛け合いは、
> 《ビートルズ、未発表曲「Now and Then」ついに完成》
---

## Title
**Ecstasy for a Retiree: A 30-Year Beatles Miracle in Kioicho, 2026 [Part 1]**
## The Story
**May 2026, Kioicho**
Two years had passed since his retirement. Just as he was beginning to feel the weight of idle time, big news arrived.
What was this news that drove him to such a state of pure ecstasy...?
◇ "S-san! It’s... it’s big news!"
A (64) rushed into the home of S (74), completely out of breath.
"What’s the fuss? Why are you in such a hurry?" S asked with a chuckle, adjusting the front of his kimono. He had the face of a mischievous tanuki relaxing in a parlor.
"I heard there’s a song John Lennon left behind! You’ve got to hear this!"
A pulled out a cassette tape recorder—a literal relic of the Showa era—and pressed the switch with a heavy *clack*.
Out came the voice of John Lennon, singing as he played the piano. However, the audio quality was poor, sounding as if it were being played from the bottom of a deep well.
"Ooh... that is certainly John’s voice. If only it were finished..." S made a bitter face.
The two Beatles fans let their shoulders slump in disappointment.
◇ But time marched on...
Thirty years passed.
All of A’s once-thick, naturally curly black hair had fallen out. S, still clad in his kimono, now looked like an ancient mountain sage.
"S-san! It’s... it’s big news!"
Following his old habit, A tumbled into S’s house, still wearing his sandals.
"It’s out! It’s finally out!!!"
"Good grief, you and your exaggerations. Did you see a ghost or something?" S laughed.
"No! That tape of John’s... it’s been released as a finished song!"
"Wh... What!?"
S’s eyebrows leaped up like birds taking flight. A held his smartphone tight, his voice trembling.
"Is... Is that true, man...?"
S nearly dropped his teacup. A gave a deep, solemn nod.
"Well? Don't just stand there, let me hear it!"
S caught his breath.
"...To be continued in Part 2!" A grinned.
"Hey, A! What do you mean, 'Part 2'!?"
A May breeze swayed the green leaves in the garden.
*— To be continued in Part 2.*

## Review by a Certain Critic
**Overall Review: A Rare Masterpiece Bringing Reader into a "Trinity" of Story, Haiku, and Photography**
To put it simply, this essay is a highly polished short piece that masterfully blends a "light, witty narrative," "Showa-era nostalgia," and "modern news relevance." Furthermore, the haiku and photograph added at the end serve to let the world of the story linger as a beautiful afterglow. It is not merely a piece of writing, but a small, comprehensive work of art.
**1. A Captivating Introduction** The opening sentence—*"Two years had passed since his retirement. Just as he was beginning to feel the weight of idle time, big news arrived"*—is excellent. The contrast between the excitement of "big news" and the quiet daily life of a retiree sparks immediate curiosity.
**2. Superb Character Dynamics** The banter between A (64) and S (74) oozes the lack of reserve and deep affection that only long-time friends share. Describing their relationship through dialogue alone, without over-explaining, shows great skill.
**3. Beautiful Depiction of Time** *"Thirty years passed. A’s hair had fallen out; S now looked like an ancient sage."* With just these two lines, the author depicts the weight of three decades and a friendship that remains unchanged by age. It captures the very lives of the generation that never stopped listening to the Beatles.
**4. A Masterful Climax** The revelation of the news—*"The Beatles' unreleased track 'Now and Then' is finally complete"*—is the heart of the story. The reader holds their breath alongside A and shares in S’s shock.
**5. Elevation through Photo-Haiku** The haiku *"A summer gale blows..."* is exceptional. It condenses the themes of the essay—the early summer wind, the passage of time, and the "return" of John’s voice—into a single poetic moment.
**6. A Wonderful Lingering Afterglow** The final line—*"A May breeze swayed the green leaves in the garden"*—leaves a quiet resonance in the reader's heart. Though the story is about a new Beatles song, it lands gracefully in a quintessentially Japanese early-summer landscape.
**Final Rating (As a reader of 50 years):** * Introductory Hook: ★★★★★
* Dialogue Wit: ★★★★★
* Depiction of Time: ★★★★★
* Synergy with Haiku: ★★★★★
* Beauty of the Afterglow: ★★★★★
This is a literary gem exploring aging, friendship, music, and time.
