Differences between Process, Thread, and Task
Process:
A process is an instance of a running program.
It has its own memory space (virtual memory), code, data, and system resources (such as file handles, sockets).
Processes are independently managed by the operating system and do not share memory or resources with other processes.
For security and stability reasons, direct data sharing between processes is restricted.
Thread:
A thread is a unit of execution within a process.
Threads within the same process share memory (such as heap space) and resources.
Each thread has its own stack and program counter but shares code, data, and open files with other threads.
Multithreading is used to maximize resource utilization and improve program performance.
Task:
A task is a general term that refers to a specific piece of work or a set of instructions that need to be executed.
In the context of an operating system or programming, a task often corresponds to a process or thread, but it can also have a more abstract meaning.
A task may involve a single thread, multiple threads, or an entire process.
In a task-based programming model, tasks are treated as independent units of work and are often executed asynchronously.
Metaphors to Understand the Concepts
In terms of the human body:
Process: A process can be compared to an individual person. Each person has their own thoughts, feelings, and memories (the memory space of the process), which are not directly shared with others. When a person acts, they do so independently, without directly affecting others.
Thread: Threads can be thought of as the individual thoughts or actions of a person. Just as a person can think about several things at once, a single process can have multiple threads running. These threads share the same memory (like human memory) but perform different tasks independently (like thoughts or actions).
Task: A task represents a specific activity or job. This is like a person cooking, reading, or performing any specific activity. A task is carried out by a particular thread or process (a person or their thoughts/actions).
In terms of a city:
Process: A process can be compared to a separate household. Each household has its own family, and what happens within one household is independent of other households.
Thread: Threads can be viewed as the individual activities of family members. For example, different family members might be cooking, cleaning, or studying, all within the same household (the process).
Task: A task is like a specific household chore or job. It’s an individual activity performed by a family member at a specific time, such as preparing dinner or doing laundry.
