The Silence After Passing Through Darkness — What I Felt While Listening to Chopin’s “Raindrop Prelude”August 2, 2026 (Sunday) Reiwa8

Today, I listened to Chopin’s “Raindrop Prelude” once again.

Its official title is Prelude No. 15 in D-flat Major, Op. 28 from 24 Preludes, Op. 28.
The name “Raindrop” was given later by others because the repeated notes throughout the piece resemble the sound of falling raindrops.

I do not have any professional knowledge of music.

However, after listening to this piece today, I felt that it was not simply a beautiful song about gentle rain.

The opening part is extremely quiet and tender.

At first, it sounds like a peaceful and happy moment.

But as I listened more deeply, I began to feel that this calmness was not just ordinary happiness or comfort.

Chopin was a fragile and sensitive person who suffered from illness from a young age. During the period when he lived with his lover, George Sand, there were not only moments of love and support, but also illness, loneliness, and worries about the future.

Then, in the middle of the piece, a sudden darkness appears.

It did not feel like the rain had simply become heavier.

It felt like a darkness hidden deep inside the human heart had suddenly emerged.

Everyone has some kind of darkness within them.

    Fear of illness.
    Pain in relationships.
    Anxiety about the future.
Loneliness that cannot easily be shared with others.

Perhaps Chopin carried these feelings as well.

The dark and heavy section continues for a long time. While listening, I found myself wondering, “Will this ever end?”

But eventually, the quiet melody from the beginning returns.

However, it does not feel exactly the same as before.

It feels like the quietness of someone who has passed through darkness and is still trying to move forward.

I do not know what Chopin was truly thinking when he composed this piece.

But after learning about his life, I began to feel that Chopin may have been a gentle and deeply sensitive person.

Perhaps he was not simply weak. Perhaps because he understood sorrow and suffering so deeply, he was able to create music that touches the hearts of others.

“Raindrop Prelude” may not only be a piece about the sound of rain.

Perhaps it is a piece about the rain that falls inside the human heart, and the quietness that remains after the storm has passed.

These are only the feelings of someone who is not a music expert.

But I believe that this is also one way of truly listening to music.
