Music Introduces Us to Lives We Never Knew — What I Felt Through "Air on the G String" — Tuesday, July 21, 2026 (Reiwa 8)

Tonight, before going to bed, I felt something mysterious again while listening to music.

Recently, classical music has been played in the public areas at Eden.

I have always liked music, but I have never had a great deal of musical knowledge.
Even with classical music, I did not know many of the titles or composers. I simply listened based on my feelings — whether I liked it, disliked it, or whether it felt comforting.

However, as I have been listening to the music played at Eden, I have started to wonder, "What is this piece called?"

Then I look up the title, listen to it again on YouTube, and learn about the background of the piece and the life of the composer.

When I do that, music that I once thought was simply beautiful begins to show me another side of itself.

Today, I thought the piece playing in the dining room might be "Air on the G String."

I asked the front desk to confirm the title of the CD, and it was indeed a piece by Bach.

Of course, I knew the name Bach.

But I did not know what kind of life he lived or why he wrote his music.

Bach was a person who lived hundreds of years ago in Germany and continued writing music for daily church services.

For him, music was not simply something beautiful to create. It was also a form of prayer.

After learning about that background, "Air on the G String" no longer felt like just a beautiful melody. It felt like the voice of someone quietly walking through life.

What is amazing is that even before knowing anything about Bach, I had already felt a sense of calm and warmth in this piece.

Of course, what the composer intended and what I personally feel do not have to be exactly the same.

However, there are moments when, after learning the background, I think, "Perhaps there was a reason why I felt that way."

    Music is truly mysterious.

It is not only knowledge that allows us to enjoy music. When knowledge is added after we have first felt something with our hearts, we can experience the music on a much deeper level.

Tonight, I am listening to music again before going to sleep.

A piece that once simply flowed in the background now sounds connected to the life of one person and the era in which they lived.

The classical music played at Eden continues to bring me new learning and small discoveries every day.
