The Unforgettable Sound I Encountered in the Dining Hall — The Night I Met Mozart’s "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" Again at Age 68 — Sunday, July 12, 2026 (Reiwa8)
After dinner, I was listening to the music playing in the dining hall at Matsuyama Eden no Sono, as I usually do.
A melody suddenly reached my ears.
"Ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-taaan..."
Following the sounds in my mind, I thought, "I know this song, but I cannot remember its name."
It was a piece I had heard before.
Then I looked it up and discovered:
It was Mozart’s "Eine kleine Nachtmusik."
Strangely, even after seeing the title, I could not immediately connect it with the melody. But the moment I heard the opening notes, my heart reacted:
"Yes, this is the one."
I realized that music has the power to reach our memories before words do.
## A Little Night Music Born More Than 250 Years Ago
"Eine kleine Nachtmusik" was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1787, when he was 31 years old.
The title means "A Little Night Music" in German.
The serenades of that time were not simply music to be listened to quietly alone, as we often do today.
They were performed to create a beautiful atmosphere during evening gatherings, such as in the gardens of aristocrats or at social events where people came together.
In 18th-century Europe, many musicians worked for royal courts or churches.
The people who enjoyed music were mainly royalty, aristocrats, and wealthy citizens.
However, the times were gradually changing.
With the spread of printed sheet music and public concerts, music began to move beyond royal courts and enter the homes and daily lives of ordinary citizens.
## The Person Called Mozart
Mozart was born in 1756 and showed extraordinary talent from a very young age.
However, he was not a member of the nobility.
He was an artist who tried to live through his own musical talent.
He left behind many masterpieces, but in 1791, he died at the young age of only 35.
Even today, the exact cause of his death is not completely known.
There are several theories, including infections and complications caused by illness.
The story that he was poisoned is famous, but today there is considered to be no reliable evidence supporting it.
When I think about the fact that he died at only 35, I cannot help wondering:
"If he had lived longer, what kind of music would he have created?"
## Why Does This Music Still Touch People’s Hearts Today?
What moved me most when I listened to this piece today was not any complicated musical theory.
From the very first note, the melody enters the heart naturally with brightness and warmth.
It feels as if the music itself is saying, "Hello."
This piece may have originally been created for aristocrats, yet more than two hundred years later, I can still be moved by it while sitting in a dining hall.
That is the true greatness of Mozart.
It is music that reaches people’s hearts beyond social class and time.
The piece I happened to encounter today while sitting in a massage chair after dinner gave me a new discovery at the age of 68.
Perhaps music is a small bridge connecting people from the past with ourselves today.
