Marriage in Japan is hard to understand. From traditional arranged marriages to modern matchmaking apps, divorce is not uncommon. Recent statistics suggest that about 30–40% of marriages end in divorce. In reality, many people struggle with married life and feel they cannot go through with a divorce because of financial issues, children, or the structure of society.
Ideally, married life should be a chance for learning and growth. But in reality, it’s not that simple. Long working hours haven’t changed, and the burden of housework and childcare often falls on women. Opportunities for women to work have increased, but so has their total load, and household chores don’t necessarily decrease. Men are busy too, but the system is still largely male-centered. Of course, there are men who enjoy participating in housework. Yet even with love and effort, many couples end up exhausted.
There seem to be some keys to making a marriage work:
• Respect each other. Even small things—opinions and feelings—matter.
• Communicate. Don’t bottle up frustrations, and share feelings gently.
• Be flexible with roles and expectations. Cooperate in work, housework, and childcare without being tied to rigid ideas.
• Share common joys and goals. Hobbies, travel, and small daily pleasures together can bring life to the relationship.
Whether a marriage starts from love or an arranged match, the backgrounds and conditions are different, but what matters is whether both people can continue to create meaning in being together. Divorce and anxiety are real, but thinking about how to improve the relationship, even a little, is itself a challenge toward the future.
Marriage doesn’t survive on ideals alone. Knowing the darker realities, and still adding small efforts and consideration for each other, may lead to lasting happiness.
