    昨今、俄かに“日本ブーム”が沸き起こり、日本の古美術にも注目が集まりつつある。

    だが、こうした時だからこそ、私達は今一度思い出すべきなのではなかろうか…即ち、私達の文化は中国があってこそ成り立っているのであって、決して“我が国オリジナル”等と自画自賛する事があってはならない、という事を…。

    そこで、改めて中国絵画に着目し、その特色や魅力を大いに語ったのが本書である。

    さて、本書の構成は第一部「山水画」第二部「花鳥画」と極めてシンプルだ。

    第一部「山水画」

    先ずは、絵画に詩文を加えたものが多い所に中国絵画の特徴を見出し、続いて水墨に依る山水画の発展について説いて行く。

    特に、中国の山水画に頻繁に登場する“釣り人”という小さなモティーフを以て、思い掛けなく中国絵画の核心に迫る事が出来たのは大きな収穫であった。

    漁夫は、決してただの点景として描かれている訳ではない…彼等は“隠者＝賢人”なのだ。

    本書を通して、中国絵画に登場するものには必ずや意味がある事が解り、芸術にも常に哲学を求めた中国ならではの表現がここに見出されたように思う。

    また、一般的に日本は“理”の北宋よりも“情”の南宋を好んだとされているが、両者の差異…若しくは発展の過程に於いて如何なる変化があったのかに言及しているのも有用だ。

    一見して同じ山水画のようでありながらも、実は大きく異なる事が理解出来る為、改めて何故、南宋画の方がより日本人の感性に合ったのかという事を考えさせられた次第である。

    第二部「花鳥画」

    日本の古美術でお馴染みの「花鳥風月」も中国文化の伝統の一つであり、この第二部では、中国で取り分け好まれたモティーフ…例えば、金魚、牡丹、鴨、蓮、魚、鴛、鷺、虫等について一つ一つ丁寧に取り上げながら具体的に読み解いて行く。

    特に、日本では“フクロウ”に“福”を掛け合わせる語呂合わせがあるように、やはり言葉や発音から想起される縁起の良さが好まれたとの事で、大いに納得した。

    尤も、どちらかというとマイナスのイメージが強い蝙蝠が好まれたと言うのは意外でもあったが、上記に挙げた梟の例のように、漢字を操る私達なら理解出来るのではなかろうか。

    いや、それだけではない…実は難解な解釈を含んでいながらも何故か自然に受け入れられる自分がいる事に気付き、改めて我が国が中国絵画から如何に多くを学んだかという事が解ったと同時に、その決定的な違いについても考えさせられたように思う。

    著者は言う―「今日の日本では、中国の伝統文化はすっかりなじみの薄いものになってしまった」と。

    急速に発達した西洋崇拝、そして今、反動のように訪れた日本文化の再発見…然しながら、そこで穴が開いてしまったのが、嘗ては全てを学び、受け継いだ筈の中国の存在である。

    そんな“置き去りにされた中国絵画”に真摯に向き合ったのが本書であり、改めて我が国の文化の源流を知る事が出来るという意味に於いても、極めて有意義な一冊であった。

    ヨーロッパ絵画に関する手頃な文庫や新書はよく見かけるが、中国絵画についてはほとんど見かけない。

    それだけでも中国絵画のファンには実に貴重な本だ。

    中国絵画の主要なジャンルである山水画と花鳥画について、描かれているテーマについて取り上げて丁寧に解説している。

    個々の記述はそれぞれとても面白く読めるが、本全体の構成が、ややまとまりに欠けているように感じられた。
