Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Exam Experience | July 2024 (315+)

Last Updated : 25 Sep, 2024

Brief Overview of the GRE Exam

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test used for admission into graduate programs across the globe. The exam tests your skills in Analytical Writing (AWA), Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. It serves as a key component of many university applications, especially in the United States. Scoring well on the GRE can open doors to prestigious programs and scholarships.

About Me

I studied in an IGCSE school until 10th grade, but my school didn’t offer Cambridge AS and A Levels for grades 11 and 12. So, I transitioned to the CBSE curriculum for my final two years of high school. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering at a government college. My academic background has been a diverse mix of both international and Indian education systems, and preparing for the GRE has been another step toward my goal of pursuing higher education abroad.

My Experience

The test day was a mix of nerves and excitement. I was particularly anxious about scoring below 315, but I managed to stay calm, and in the end, the exam went smoothly. The testing center staff were extremely supportive, which helped ease my anxiety.

The AWA section was surprisingly easy for me since the essay prompt was exactly the same as one of the practice tests I had worked on. Having already written an essay on that topic gave me an instant confidence boost.

The Quantitative section, however, was a different story. I found it much more challenging than the questions from the official ETS guide. Managing time became an issue as the difficulty was higher than expected. The Verbal section, on the other hand, was on par with my practice tests, so there were no surprises there. My mock test scores were typically between 315 and 321, and I ended up scoring within that range, which I’m happy about.

Some Advice

One practical tip I’d like to share: use the washroom before the test and don’t drink too much water. The testing rooms are air-conditioned, and frequent bathroom trips can become a problem since the timer doesn’t stop during the exam. You want to avoid unnecessary distractions during the test.

Preparation

I didn’t enroll in any coaching classes and decided to prepare on my own. I found the official ETS books quite helpful for practice, especially for the Quant section. For the Verbal section, Greg Mat’s resources were great, although his practice tests are still in beta and might not always reflect the actual difficulty. Overall, I believe that with 3-6 months of consistent preparation, it’s possible to score 315+ if you stay confident and trust in your abilities.
