Install Deepin Desktop on Fedora 45 / 44: What Still Works

Deepin Desktop does not install on Fedora 45. Not from Fedora, not from any COPR. Fedora 45 also drops the deepin applications that Fedora 44 still carried, so the terminal, calculator and image viewer are gone from the repositories too. The dnf group install "Deepin Desktop" line from older guides, including the earlier version of this page, has nothing left to point at.

Two things still work. The deepin apps run on a Fedora 45 desktop from an Arch Linux container, and DDE itself runs where it is maintained. This guide shows both, plus the upgrade trap that catches anyone who installed deepin packages on Fedora 44. The Fedora 45 checks, the upgrade and the container route were run in October 2026 on a fresh Fedora 45 machine and on a Fedora 44 machine carrying deepin packages, upgraded in place to 45.

Is Deepin Desktop available on Fedora 45?

No. The old guides target a comps environment named “Deepin Desktop”, and dnf5 lists environments separately from groups. Check both:

sudo dnf environment list | grep -i deepin
sudo dnf group list --hidden | grep -i deepin

Both print nothing and exit 1. Twenty environments are defined on Fedora 45, and Deepin is not one of them. The Cloud Server row appears twice because that is the environment this machine was built from:

Asking for the old group by its ID ends at the resolver:

sudo dnf group install deepin-desktop

dnf5 does not soften it:

Failed to resolve the transaction:
No match for argument: deepin-desktop
You can try to add to command line:
  --skip-unavailable to skip unavailable packages

One trap for scripts: dnf group info "Deepin Desktop" prints “No matches found.” and still exits 0. Check the output, never the return code.

The individual packages are gone as well. Query everything with deepin in the name, plus the DDE and DTK prefixes:

sudo dnf repoquery --qf "%{name} %{evr} %{repoid}\n" "*deepin*" "dde*" "dtk*" | sort -u

Five names come back, and none of them is something you would run. Two are a PDF rendering library, two are a logging library, and the last is a Go development package:

deepin-pdfium 1.5.1-8.fc45 fedora
deepin-pdfium-devel 1.5.1-8.fc45 fedora
dtklog 0.0.2-11.fc45 fedora
dtklog-devel 0.0.2-11.fc45 fedora
golang-github-linuxdeepin-x11-client-devel 1.0.2-5.fc43 fedora

Fedora 44 users could install the deepin apps on their own and run them under GNOME or KDE. On Fedora 45 that command fails on every name:

sudo dnf install deepin-terminal deepin-calculator deepin-image-viewer \
  deepin-gtk-theme deepin-icon-theme deepin-wallpapers

Six packages requested, six misses:

Fedora 42 reached end of life on 27 May 2026, so it is not a route. The desktop would come up on a system that no longer gets security updates.

Why Fedora retired the Deepin packages

The trigger came from openSUSE. Its security team removed the Deepin desktop in May 2025 after years of unresolved D-Bus and polkit findings in the deepin file manager daemon, together with packaging that routed around their review process. Days later a Fedora ticket titled “Deepin security review request” made the more uncomfortable point: Fedora had shipped the same components with no security review at all.

Maintenance finished it off. Core packages had failed to build for months, several were already retired one by one, and the packaging group had gone quiet. FESCo gave the maintainers four weeks to state the project’s status in April 2026. The coordinator of the original packaging effort replied that the people who built the package set had run out of capacity for it. The vote closed the matter on 19 May 2026:

AGREED: Retire all packages in the list, with the message mentioning the fesco ticket. Ask releng to not unretire those packages if a request is made, unless they passed review again. APPROVED (+7, 0, 0)

FESCo ticket 3409

Read the second sentence twice. Nobody can bring the packages back by asking release engineering to reverse the retirement. They have to pass package review again, with maintainers who commit to keeping them building and patched. Fedora 45 is the first release cut after that vote, which is why the apps disappeared along with everything else.

Do the Deepin COPR repositories work on Fedora 45?

No. Four COPR projects carry Deepin builds for recent Fedora, and none of them gives Fedora 45 anything that installs. The copr subcommand comes from dnf5-plugins, which a Workstation install already has:

sudo dnf install dnf5-plugins
sudo dnf copr enable liuyang/deepin-dde

The classic DDE rebuild never built a Fedora 45 chroot, so the enable step stops before writing a repo file:

Chroot not found in the given Copr project (fedora-45-x86_64).
You can choose one of the available chroots explicitly:
 fedora-43-x86_64
 fedora-44-x86_64

The Treeland rebuild, shrisha/deepin-treeland, fails the same way and offers only fedora-44-x86_64. So does charofstring/gxde-core, a fork called GXDE that tracks the older DDE look and offers Fedora 43 and 44 only. Forcing a Fedora 44 chroot onto a Fedora 45 system is not a fix. Those builds link against Fedora 44’s Qt, so the result is the same broken dependency chain you will see in the upgrade section below.

One project does enable cleanly. topazus/dde advertises Fedora 45 and rawhide chroots:

sudo dnf copr enable topazus/dde
sudo dnf repoquery --repo "copr:copr.fedorainfracloud.org:topazus:dde" --qf "%{name} %{evr}\n" | sed -E "s/.*\.(fc[0-9]+).*/\1/" | sort | uniq -c

The second command counts which Fedora release each package was built for. All 67 are Fedora 42 builds copied forward into the newer chroots:

     67 fc42

Ask it for the session, the shell, the window manager and the Qt 6 platform plugin, and the resolver lists what is missing:

sudo dnf install deepin-session deepin-shell deepin-kwin deepin-qt6platform-plugins

Nothing installs. Every package is pinned to the exact Qt of Fedora 42, and the DTK libraries it expects are not in Fedora 45 at all:

You can try to add to command line:
  --skip-broken to skip uninstallable packages

A private Qt API dependency cannot be met by a newer Qt, which is the point of pinning it. The project’s last builds date from November 2024. A fifth search hit, hezhengyu/dde, holds a single package, deepin’s KWin fork, and nothing to run it with. Disable what you enabled:

sudo dnf copr remove topazus/dde

Upgrading from Fedora 44 with Deepin packages installed

This is the part that bites real machines. The earlier version of this guide had Fedora 44 readers install the deepin apps from Fedora, and some went further with the liuyang/deepin-dde COPR. We rebuilt exactly that machine: six deepin packages from Fedora, then the COPR session, dock, launcher and daemon on top. Then we ran the standard Fedora 44 to 45 upgrade:

sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=45

It refuses to resolve:

  - dtklog-0.0.2-9.fc44.x86_64 does not belong to a distupgrade repository
  - problem with installed package
  - problem with installed package

Here is what the resolver is saying. Fedora 45 ships a newer spdlog with a new soname. The retired dtk6log has no Fedora 45 build, so the Fedora 44 copy still wants the old library. Fedora’s fedora-obsolete-packages normally removes retired packages during an upgrade, but on Fedora 45 its only deepin entry is an old dock plugin, so nothing steps in for these. Every Qt 6 deepin app on the machine hangs off that one logging library.

The fix is to let the upgrade remove what it cannot carry forward:

sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=45 --allowerasing

Read the removal list before you answer yes. Besides the oldest kernel, which the upgrade drops here, it takes the Qt 6 deepin stack and everything built on it. The terminal, the calculator and the greeter go, along with the COPR dock and session:

Then reboot into the offline upgrade with sudo dnf offline reboot. It completed without errors here and the machine came back on Fedora 45.

Clean up the Fedora 44 leftovers

The upgrade does not remove everything. Packages that do not depend on the Qt 6 stack survive as Fedora 44 builds that will never get another update. List them:

sudo dnf list --extras

Sixteen orphans on this machine, two of them from the COPR:

The COPR is the quieter problem. Its repo file is still there, it has no Fedora 45 chroot, and the repo file sets skip_if_unavailable=True. dnf loads it on every refresh without a single warning, and dnf copr list still shows it enabled. Remove the repo first, then the orphans:

sudo dnf copr remove liuyang/deepin-dde
sudo dnf remove "deepin-*" dtkcore dtkgui dtkwidget
sudo dnf autoremove

The remove step took 13 named packages and 69 unused dependencies with it, 537 MiB in total. On this minimal machine some of those dependencies were general tools the deepin stack had pulled in, such as udisks2, bluez and ntfs-3g. A desktop that needs them keeps them through its own dependencies, but read the list before confirming. The autoremove that follows takes more, rtkit-daemon and switcheroo-control here, so read that list too. Confirm the system is clean:

sudo dnf list --extras
sudo rpm -qa | grep -ciE "deepin|^dde|dtk"

No extras and a zero count:

If you are still on Fedora 44 and have not upgraded yet, do the cleanup first. Remove the COPR and the deepin packages on 44, upgrade with no extra flags, then reinstall the apps through the container route below.

Run the Deepin apps on Fedora 45 with Distrobox

Arch Linux still packages the deepin applications, built against Arch’s own Qt and kept current. Distrobox runs an Arch userland in a Podman container that shares your home directory, display and sound. The apps open as normal windows on the Fedora desktop. This is the practical way to keep Deepin Terminal or the calculator on Fedora 45. If you have not used containers this way before, Distrobox vs Toolbx explains the model.

Install Distrobox. Podman is already on Workstation:

sudo dnf install distrobox

Create an Arch container from the Toolbx project’s Arch image, which ships with sudo and the host integration packages Distrobox expects:

distrobox create --yes --name deepin --image quay.io/toolbx/arch-toolbox:latest

Install the apps inside it with pacman. The first enter runs Distrobox’s one-time container setup before the command:

distrobox enter deepin -- sudo pacman -Syu --noconfirm deepin-terminal deepin-calculator deepin-image-viewer deepin-icon-theme

Confirm what landed:

distrobox enter deepin -- pacman -Q deepin-terminal deepin-calculator deepin-image-viewer

Current Arch builds, newer than anything Fedora ever shipped:

deepin-terminal 6.5.40-2
deepin-calculator 6.5.40-1
deepin-image-viewer 6.0.30-1

Export each app so it shows up in the Fedora application grid. The export writes a launcher into ~/.local/share/applications/ that starts the app inside the container:

distrobox enter deepin -- distrobox-export --app deepin-terminal
distrobox enter deepin -- distrobox-export --app deepin-calculator
distrobox enter deepin -- distrobox-export --app deepin-image-viewer

Each one confirms the export:

Application deepin-terminal successfully exported.
OK!
deepin-terminal will appear in your applications list in a few seconds.

Search for deepin in the GNOME overview. The three apps appear with their own icons, next to an entry named Deepin that opens a shell in the container:

GNOME overview search showing exported Deepin Calculator, Deepin Terminal and Deepin Image Viewer on Fedora 45

Deepin Terminal opens straight into the container. The host release file is readable under /run/host, which makes the split obvious: an Arch userland running on a Fedora 45 host:

Deepin Terminal on Fedora 45 showing the Fedora host release, Arch Linux container and installed deepin package versions

The calculator and image viewer behave like any other window, here with one of the deepin wallpapers open. Install deepin-wallpapers in the container if you want the same images:

Deepin Image Viewer and Deepin Calculator running from an Arch Distrobox container on Fedora 45 GNOME

Two limits. Launched from a terminal, the deepin apps print Qt debug logging to stdout, which is noise and not an error. And the container needs its own updates: run distrobox enter deepin -- sudo pacman -Syu now and then, because dnf upgrade never touches it. This route gives you the apps, not the desktop. A full DDE session needs its own display manager and system services, which a container cannot provide.

What about Fedora 44?

Fedora 44 is supported until a few weeks after Fedora 46 ships, and it is the last release where Fedora’s own deepin apps install. They work, apart from deepin-system-monitor, which crashes on startup (Red Hat Bugzilla 2483166). Remember that they block the upgrade described above.

The two COPR desktops still install on Fedora 44, and neither ends in a usable session. We took both to the login screen and past it in August 2026. The classic build, liuyang/deepin-dde, brings up the deepin greeter on lightdm:

After login the screen stays black. The session asks systemd for dde-shell, which this COPR does not build, and in this generation of DDE the wallpaper, desktop icons and panels are all dde-shell plugins. The dock fails on its own too. It was built against deepin’s KWayland fork, which Fedora retired, so the loader finds stock KWayland without the symbol it needs:

dde-dock: symbol lookup error: dde-dock: undefined symbol: _ZN8KWayland6Client8Registry25clientManagementAnnouncedEjj

Here is the same error inside Deepin Terminal on that machine:

Deepin Terminal showing the dde-dock undefined KWayland symbol error on Fedora 44

The Treeland build, shrisha/deepin-treeland, gets further. Its DDM display manager masks the password, offers a session switcher and logs you in:

Then the shell fails to load the plugin that draws the desktop. The user journal shows why:

[email protected]: start operation timed out. Terminating.
dde-shell[1510]: Could not find the Qt platform plugin "dxcb" in ""
dde-shell[1510]: Loading plugin failed: "org.deepin.ds.desktop"

The package installs 20 dde-shell plugins and the desktop plugin is not one of them. The Qt 6 build of the dxcb platform plugin has never been packaged for Fedora either. Both COPRs also take over the system display manager, so try them only on a VM. If you already did this on real hardware, switch to a text console with Ctrl+Alt+F3 and hand the display back:

sudo systemctl enable --force gdm
sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target
sudo dnf copr remove liuyang/deepin-dde
sudo dnf remove "deepin-*" "dde-*" treeland ddm
sudo systemctl reboot

Swap gdm for the display manager the machine started with, sddm on the KDE spin or lightdm on Xfce, and swap the COPR name for shrisha/deepin-treeland if that is the one you enabled.

What to run instead of Deepin on Fedora

Where the desktop stands across distributions, checked in October 2026:

DistributionDeepin Desktop status
deepin (upstream)First party, current Treeland generation, the only fully supported way to run DDE
Arch Linux53 packages in the deepin group in [extra], several rebuilt in early October
Fedora 45Desktop and apps retired; no COPR has an installable Fedora 45 build
Fedora 44Apps still packaged; desktop retired, COPRs install but do not produce a working session
Debian 13Desktop not packaged; deepin-terminal is in the archive
openSUSERemoved in 2025 over unresolved security findings

Pick by what you wanted from Deepin in the first place.

If you want DDE itself, run it where it is maintained. The upstream distribution is the least surprising option. On the rolling side, Arch keeps the whole group current. archinstall gets a base system up quickly, and the post-install guide covers what to configure afterwards.

If you want the look and feel on Fedora, the closest match is a Qt desktop with a dock and a centered launcher. KDE Plasma on Fedora is the natural landing spot. For something lighter, Budgie and Cinnamon keep the single-panel layout Deepin users tend to like, and Xfce is the low-resource option. Add the deepin apps through Distrobox as shown above, and work through things to do after installing Fedora 45 for the rest of the desktop setup.

Flathub has no deepin applications at all, so Distrobox remains the packaged route on Fedora 45. For the dnf5 syntax used throughout, the DNF5 cheatsheet is the quick reference.

Will Deepin Desktop come back to Fedora?

Not by request, and not soon. FESCo attached a condition to the retirement: nothing returns unless it passes package review again. That means someone volunteering for the workload that beat the previous group, on a package set with an unreviewed security history. Upstream is meanwhile rebuilding the desktop around Treeland, with Qt and KWayland patches Fedora does not carry. The community rebuilds show the cost, because none of them reached Fedora 45. Treat DDE as a deepin and Arch desktop, run the apps you like from a container, and give the machine you log into every morning a session Fedora actually supports.

  1. Good to see it’s still supported, I always liked Deepin DE just for the simple fact that it’s the only DE that actually supports fractional scaling properly without looking like an interpolated blurry mess. I desperately need 150% scaling (100 is too small, 200 is too large for my 1600p display). GNOME should borrow whatever Deepin is doing there.

  2. Yes, after updating Fedora, Deepin not works as expacted, can we downgrade our Linux Fedora OS to work or there are other solutions.
