#11  Everybody has observed  that the Shinto shrines are conspicuously devoid of objects and instruments of worship, and  that a plain mirror hung in the sanctuary forms the essential part of its furnishing.

私の訳：神社にお詣りする者は誰でも観る。その礼拝の対象及び道具は際立って少なく、奥殿に揚げられた素鏡がその備え付けの主要部分を成すのである。

しんし 【神祠】   神のやしろ。ほこら。
