#8  Such loyalty to the sovereign, such reverence for ancestral memory, and such filial piety as are not taught by any other creed, were inculcated by the Shinto doctrines, imparting passivity to the otherwise arrogant character of the samurai.

私の訳：他のいかなる信条によっても教わることのなかった主君に対する忠誠、先祖への崇敬、 さらに孝心などが神道の教義によって教えられた。そのため、サムライの傲岸な性格に忍耐心がつけ加えられたのである。
