#15  In its original and unalloyed sense,  it meant duty,  pure and simple, — hence,  we speak of the Giri  we owe to parents, to superiors,  to inferiors, to society at large,  and so forth.

私の訳：本来の、そして純粋なる意味において義理は純粋で単純な義務を意味した---それ故に我々が両親、目上の者、目下の者、概して社会全体、等等に負うところの義理について我々は語るのである。
