I know the comments section is going to be toxic, but before the angry Americans show up, I would like to say, as an American, that I am glad that other countries are trying different solutions to our societal ills. Even if my own country won't accept these solutions because they're against some people's beliefs, I am glad that at least some countries are progressing to a more just and equitable society.
Keep up the good work Finland and Denmark! You're helping people, and that's what matters!
I live in the U.S. I'm upset because I don't get help. I have mental health problems, and year before last I was homeless. There are programs that are supposed to help, but they are a complete joke. Now I'll be lucky as hell if I don't end up homeless again or in prison because I snap and try to kill someone. And knowing that there are countries where I could get the help I need, but I can't get there, well, that makes me feel worse.
@Eliseus I agree. I am a US citizen living in NZ. Lots of great policies are demonstrated and proven to work in other countries. I just wish the US was able to learn lessons.
@Eliseus American here - my Dad was homeless for almost a decade because of an untreated mental illness. We couldn't get him effective help until he got physically sick enough to agree to stay in the hospital. (And while they were fixing his foot they figured out an effective med combo for the mental issues.) The only reason he still takes his pills now is that they don't tell him which little pills are the pain ones so he has to take them ALL. :p Mental health treatment is FAR behind other branches of medicine for no other reason then... no one has invented telephathy yet. So we are still painfully guessing our way to correct answers. The insane asylums were so bad that dumping the inmates on the street actually improved things! (And the insane asylums were themselves nearly as big an improvement over what passed for "mental health care" before that.)
And lets be real here. Fixing the rioting problem and the economic shutdown and the partizan bickering that blocks ANY bills from getting passed really are a higher priority then homelessness and health care. (Airway, Bleeding, Circulation and THEN you deal with the broken leg)
I have hard time to understand you apologize on behalf of a president that has marched from victory to another without doing harm to anyone. Americans have lot to understand about politics. You vote someone because you agree with them. Not because everybody say they are doodoo butts.
@GodEmperorTrump I...honestly have no idea what you're saying? Are you saying that we do support Trump? That he's a good leader? Sorry, I just serious am not understanding what you're trying to get at here.
Does anyone know what this survey is based on?
The US isn't great when it comes to gender inequality and safety for women, but bottom ten seems like it's really pushing the limits of believability.
...also, the US with his little Captain Marvel is cute.
@korben600 I mean tbh consumers should never complain that they can get 49 oz. out of a $1.30, that is simply beautiful in my eyes. but hey i guess bog food portions can be intimidating for some that don't think, "Hey i can save this and heat it up later."
@Shannen Well I wouldn't say that, the leftovers is like a second meal for sure but if you are able to ration out something that was made to simply stuff you in one meal into days worth then t just might be everyone has no appetite/hunger. plus restaurant food typically is kinda pricey, unless talking fast food in which case you could feed you whole family at jack in the box with only 10 bucks if they are low maintenance.
@SirKibbz Still sounds pretty handy for the stereotypical filipino nurse who's working all the time and is so small the amount of food that would make her feel bloated would be miserly meager to foreign children
Well, to begin with, the maximum capacity of an adult human bladder ranges from 16-24 oz (depending on the size of the person). How many times do you want to go to the bathroom and piss from just one single beverage?
@Hinoron Well I mean yeah you are gonna go to the bathroom more, and the cup is the size of a person's head. but again you shouldn't complain about quantity for cheap. when you go out to eat at a restaurant do you hold off from getting a refill after a second glass because of bladder capacity? just seems restrictive to complain about a good deal.
@SirKibbz
No one is complaining about the ECONOMY of what's being offered, you're right about that. However, more of us than not would only want one drink with a meal, and almost none of us would want a third glass. Nor do we WANT to eat a meal more than double the physical size of our stomachs.
So either we are feeling obligated to stuff food into ourselves until we are very uncomfortable, or else all that extra, unnecessary food is being wasted.
Wasting food is a rather offensive idea to anyone who's ever gone hungry for lack of it.
@Hinoron you are supposed to jut take the rest home in a to go bag and heat it up later whenever you are hungry. no one is forcing yah to gorge yourself or throw away half a meal 0_o
@SirKibbz
Who really WANTS to do that though?
We come to a restaurant with the intent of order one meal per person, not several. It's like the restaurant is assigning us chores.
Listen, the entire premise of this day's comic was that Americans do not understand most other people's desire to eat smaller portions. We could keep going back and forth like this, but I think we're just validating the comic's point.
;)
@Hinoron It's just a weird thing in my eyes to complain about getting more bang for your buck, it's not so much a chore but more a decision for people to make if their stomach is not american made and can't handle a pound of burger, a side of fries to feed the Irish for a week, and enough soda to drown a 4 year old.
and I know it's exactly the point of this comic and yeah we are kinda proving it. But I would think if anything big portions would be something of a good thing apposed to spending $10-14 at a resturaunt and not getting enough food.
Hey Humon? This would probably be too political, but can you do a strip where every single character (except for Russia) wears a pink hat with kitty ears to an intervention with brother America? Like, everyone shows up to say that they're really worried about him, and his mental health (organized by sister america of course). You could even introduce Antarctica into the comic! (If you don't know what I'm referring to, during the women's march against the president, scientists in Antarctica sent a picture showing that they protested too. It's really hard to get all seven continents to protest together, but America did it. I am both proud of and horrified by my country at times...)
I checked online, apparently the reason Cebuano is so high up is because several separate people made bots to post Wikipedia articles in the language, to encourage people to edit them. Apparently, most of Cebuano Wikipedia is just one sentence blurbs.
@korben600 As someone who speaks some dialects of the Filipino language, yes, I can confirm. I usually read on Wikipedia when bored, and despite Cebuano having more "articles" Tagalog Wikipedia tends to be much more informative than its Cebuano counterpart.
Still, the Tagalog Wikipedia, alongside the Waray Wikipedia still has the "one-sentence article stubs", just a tad bit less than its Cebuano counterpart, which, of course, is the worst offender in the world of Philippine Wikipedia.
Thankfully, the problem was less prominent in the Kapampangan, Chavacano, and Pangasinense dialects, which weren't too involved in the "article-war" between the Cebuano, Tagalog, and Waray dialects.
And to end this with good news, the Ilokano and Bikolano Wikipedias managed to be mostly free of this problem.
Given that a little less than half our country voted for him, I know as a whole we kind of deserve this, but I didn't support him, and damn, seeing this is almost physically painful for me....
Hi! I just got a SATW 10 minutes ago, but I've been reading this comic for some time now. I was waiting for this comic since the referendum came out and I gotta say, I feel like this is pretty accurate (though I live in the US so thankfully we won't have to deal with a catastrophe of this magnitude until November). I would also like to say that this is one of the most toxic comment sections I've ever seen on SATW, and I am getting an impression of why the leave campaign won. Most people I am reading fully acknowledge that this has been a debacle, but the Leave supporters are several orders of magnitude more vocal about themselves. I can seen how Britons would get the idea about how leaving the EU would be beneficial for everyone. However, I would like to point out that in my personal opinion, this is a trainwreck, and pretty much every economist, every head of state, and everyone who invested in the British pound agrees with me.
@korben600 As an American, you might appreciate that the American colonies leaving was viewed as a similar trainwreck. Great Britain provided military security and was the largest trading partner. We'll never know what would have happened had the US not formed, but it's hard to say that was obviously bad. (And it certainly happened under much worse terms than Brexit.)
Money is fascist: it likes stability. The status quo will inherently be preferred by those who were doing the best under it, so economically change will be bad for those currently holding lots of money. But that doesn't mean it's bad for everyone or for future economic growth. It's just that existing structure doesn't like disruption. And I'm not saying this is necessarily good, but you can't get disruptive growth without disruption.
Also, it's true that the British Pound was $1.325 before Brexit and is $1.317 as I type this. (Having recovered slightly.) That's a drop. But how do people who "invested in the British pound" feel about the drop from $1.70 in 2014? Or from $2.05 in 2007? The drop from Brexit is (so far) much *much* smaller than the drop they'd gotten while staying in.
Lastly, Austria, Italy, and to a lesser extent France and Sweden have significant numbers who want out. That will depend on what changes the EU is willing to make and how the UK looks by the time those countries have to choose. But you have to ask yourself: if the UK leaving was so obviously a trainwreck, why would others be anxious to go? We have to consider that even if the idea of the EU is good and some of the aspects are positive, the entire package may have more downside than people want to put up with.
Whatever happens, it's a very interesting time to be alive.
Our beds are so high, when my little brother bought a new mattress, he didn't even bother to put the little wheels on the bottom, he just plopped the thing on the floor. But even without the wheels, it's still a solid foot or so high, which deters the dog from sleeping on it (that and the territorial sibling sleeping in it).
Yay! States are now part of SATW! I both can't wait for, and dread the comic where my homestate of California is featured. Because deep down I know it's probably going to be for something really bad or really stupid. Oh well, at least I'm not from Florida....
@korben600 Or Texas. Might be fun for Texas to show up, it'd be like having old Brother America back again. The one who loved guns and only hated immigrants when it was his girlfriend's shifty brother jumping the fence.
As an American, I kind of have been waiting for something like this for months.
Also as an American, I can confirm that you hit the nail on the head on exactly how ridiculous this election is, though my one comment is that I'm pretty sure he hasn't said the last comment yet, though he has talked about putting nukes in Japan and South Korea, which is pretty bad.
Oh, and though I know this is a little obscure for a primarily European Politics/mythology/anthropomorphic projection based Comic, if you ever do a comic on American 3rd parties like people are suggesting below, make sure to remind people that throwing your vote away to a candidate that won't win just makes it more likely that people like Trump will win. For context, people voting for 3rd parties is one of the biggest reasons George W. Bush, who was responsible for the invasion of Iraq and other messes, won was because people kept voting for 3rd parties and split the vote.
@korben600 That's incorrect. Nader's voters were majority green/independents who most likely wouldn't have voted democrat anyways. Less democrats voted for Nader than for Bush. Why aren't the republican voting democrats blamed at all for Gore's loss?
In fact why wasn't Gore blamed for his uninspiring campaign? Or the fact he didn't fight his Florida case hard enough?
Who do the democrats think they are, that they can expect people's votes even if they don't represent them?
If the democrats were really afraid of Trump, they wouldn't have tilted the scales against Bernie.
Not anyone's fault Hillary cares more about neo-cons and conservatives, than left-leaning progressives. Or that she's corrupt and nobody is excited for her, or even likes her.
Ps. Hillary pushed for those wars too. And she's proudly naming the endorsements she received by those same neo-cons responsible for the wars you mentioned.
@Ethelwood After looking farther into it, 3rd party candidates were probably not a big of a deal in the 2000 election than I realized, however, in a race like 2016, 3rd party candidates may not be a force of nature, but they are dangerous nonetheless. Jill Stein and Gary Johnson currently are polling with 15% of the population, and when factored into the polls, the gap between Hillary and Trump gets smaller. Both not only have negligible chances of winning, both are hilariously incompetent. Gary Johnson's onscreen gaffes are enough to show he is almost as unqualified as Trump is, though probably less corrupt, while Jill Stein believes that Wifi is dangerous to people's health. America needs a better form of voting, where people can vote for 3rd party candidates without having to worry about contributing to the downfall of a competent candidate, but until then, people should be careful of them.
Oh, and by the way, could you please cite instances where she was corrupt, and pandered to "neo-cons and conservatives"? I keep hearing these accusations, but never where they're actually from.
P.S. Respectfully, everyone pushed for those wars, including Mike Pence and Donald Trump, and unlike them, she didn't lie about her support. Furthermore she is not proudly naming the endorsements from the Bush administration, she is "proudly naming the endorsements" of more military officers than any Democrat before her.
@korben600 Wow. Competent? Hillary? Ha. "...She's often confused."
I'd say perhaps compared to Trump she's more competent, but Johnston and Stein's at least not often confused.
Hillary's 'qualifications' are pretty much that she's been in government positions a long time. And that time has been marred with countless scandals and allegations of corruption. And she's got powerful allies from these years of political career that could potentially help her implement everyone of her machinations even the republicans can't dream of doing.
If you don't what people to vote for third parties, how about canvassing and phonebanking and making people excited for Hillary rather than shaming them for voting for who they believe best represents them? Isn't that what democracy is about? - Voting for people that best represents you? Until people grow a pair and start voting for third parties, you're going to be stuck with the same 2 pile of sh*t every 4 years to complain about.
Again, it's not the people's fault that Hillary is a weak candidate the DNC pushed onto them. If you want Hillary to win, PB, FB and Canvass, don't start shaming non-voters.
Ps. The fact that she's naming them is alarming. Hillary admits her mistake, then does the same thing Libya and now proposing to do the same in Syria. Some acknowledgement that is. And yes Trump supported it, but I never said he didn't. And Trump is seriously all over the place, he's inconsistent. I don't even think he knows what he's doing. I just think he got lucky and decided, hey! they like it, so I'm going to keep doing it.
@TheChief Actually, right now, China is trying to rein in Kim ... BUT there's a problem. They don't want to do something that'll destabilize North Korea and result in a collapse. That's why they're against a number of actions that would, in their eyes, destabilize Kim.
Keep up the good work Finland and Denmark! You're helping people, and that's what matters!
