    AI Processing Education Deep Learning

The University’s Soul Has Been Uploaded

As universities embrace generative AI, they are allowing Big Tech to reshape teaching and learning without first answering a fundamental question: Does this technology belong in the classroom at all?

    Timothy Scott
    Oct 24, 2026

Universities are making a consequential concession: allowing privately owned generative AI systems into the very processes through which students learn to read, write, reason, and exercise judgment. Their adoption is increasingly presented as inevitable. AI exists, so higher education must adapt. Under this logic, adoption is expected, while refusal requires an explanation. But technological availability is not educational justification. Before reorganizing teaching and learning around these systems, universities should answer the question that advocates of adoption too often avoid: Why should AI be there at all?

The language of inevitability obscures who is responsible. A recent Forbes headline declared, “MIT Says AI Is Forcing a Rethink of College Itself.” AI is not forcing universities to purchase licenses, revise courses, shift budgets, or surrender influence over educational infrastructure to private vendors. People make those decisions. They should have to explain and defend them. Who was consulted? What alternatives were considered? And whose interests are being served? California State University signed a $16.9 million OpenAI agreement in 2025. A statewide student leader said her association wasn't consulted; officials cited an advisory committee with student and faculty members.

'Pause AI Now!' Sanders Says as US Banks Let Agents Operate in Customer Accounts

“Left unchecked, AI could endanger the entire global financial system—including your bank account.”

    Brett Wilkins
    Oct 22, 2026

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Thursday renewed calls to pause development of artificial intelligence following reporting that unauthorized AI agents are operating inside the systems of major US banks.

Axios' Madison Mills revealed that Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and other financial institutions are "racing to contain agent risks," including "situations when an agent or AI assistant accesses a human's account with the user's permission and login credentials," which "goes against the guidelines of most banks requiring that humans log in to their own accounts."

Big Tech Has Become the 'Ubiquitous Villain' of the 2026 Midterms

Big Tech Has Become the 'Ubiquitous Villain' of the 2026 Midterms

"Trump and his anti-AI regulation posture is dragging the party to a politically suicidal place," said one Democratic strategist.

    Brad Reed
    Oct 22, 2026

American voters' antipathy toward Big Tech companies has become a central theme of campaigns in the 2026 midterm elections, according to an analysis published by The Guardian on Thursday.

The Guardian noted that hundreds of midterm campaign ads attacking data centers have aired over the past two months, with both Republicans and Democrats accusing one another of being pawns of the artificial intelligence industry.

‘This Is Assault’: Utah Woman Speaks Out After Cop Body Slammed Her at Data Center Protest

“I have a habit of talking at data center meetings. But never have I been met with such excessive force."

A Utah woman is speaking out after video showed a police officer slamming to the ground as she was protesting against the approval of an artificial intelligence data center.

In a Thursday interview with Fox 13 Salt Lake City, 27-year-old Aspen Azalea demanded the firing of Utah County Sheriff's Deputy Phillip Crawford after he was caught on video throwing her to the ground during a Wednesday night meeting of the Utah County Planning Commission in the city of Provo.

'Working People Will Pay a High Price': Report Warns AI Bubble Is 'Primed to Pop'

"Policymakers need to act now to shore up the financial system and make clear that taxpayers will not be forced to bail out the companies and financiers responsible."

    Brad Reed
    Oct 21, 2026

A report released on Wednesday warns that the investment boom in artificial intelligence is a financial bubble that is "primed to pop" and harm working-class Americans if lawmakers don't take concrete steps to shield them from the damage.

The report, produced by Open Markets Institute and Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund, warns that Big Tech companies are using increasingly risky debt-fueled financing methods to keep plowing money into AI infrastructure, which has resulted in global stock markets growing overvalued to "a historic degree."

Democrats Should Get Behind a National AI Data Center Moratorium

Democrats have a golden opportunity to capitalize on this issue, win big in November, and take real action on AI data centers to protect people and the environment.

    Mitch Jones
    Oct 21, 2026

It’s becoming clear that one of the most potent political issues of this election cycle is the debate over artificial intelligence and the massive data centers powering this rapidly evolving technology. Polling consistently shows that Americans overwhelmingly oppose the rapid buildout of polluting and disruptive AI data centers and are increasingly concerned about AI safety. Despite this, President Donald Trump and national Republicans have embraced Big Tech’s AI agenda, giving Democrats a popular advantage served up on a silver platter. Democrats should seize the opportunity by supporting a moratorium on AI data centers and a ban on AI “superintelligence” across the board.

For the last several years, with little public discussion or debate, AI data centers have invaded communities across the country with devastating consequences. Electricity prices are spiking, water resources are dwindling, the air is being polluted, and lives are being disrupted. In the past year, the backlash has greatly intensified. Since our partner organization Food & Water Watch became the first national group in the country to call for a full national moratorium on data centers, more than 500 organizations have joined the call. Responding to the popular demand, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) recently introduced moratorium legislation.

'The Public Deserves Answers': No Kings Coalition Gives Zuckerberg 24 Hours to Come Clean on Instagram Block

"Critical voter information or civic participation should not be blocked, throttled, or otherwise interfered with if Meta aspires to be a trusted actor in our democracy."

    Brad Reed
    Oct 20, 2026

The coalition of organizations behind the No Kings demonstrations on Monday demanded answers from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about why Instagram suspended the movement's primary account on Saturday.

In a letter to Zuckerberg, No Kings took issue with the explanations given by the company so far about the account's removal, which lasted approximately 90 minutes at the peak of rally activity.

Federal Communications Commission Holds Open Meeting In Washington, DC

'The Risk Here Is Severe': Schumer Warns Trump FCC Against Approving AI Robocalls Ahead of Midterms

"Putting Americans in a position where they can be fed misinformation through AI-generated deception ahead of a crucial election is yet another attempt by Republicans to mislead voters."

    Jake Johnson
    Oct 19, 2026

The leader of the Senate Democratic caucus on Monday urged the Republican-controlled Federal Communications Commission to reject a petition by a right-wing group to allow unsolicited, artificial intelligence-generated robocalls ahead of next month's midterm elections.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) warned that granting Club for Growth's request would mean "unleashing a Pandora’s box of election mis- and disinformation made more believable with AI." Monday is the final day for public comment on the group's petition.

How the World Bank Can Ensure AI Jobs Are Really 'Better'

In Bangkok and Seoul, “better jobs” should mean a living wage, protection when illness or injury stops someone from working, and the power to negotiate working conditions. These are rights that require enforcement.

    Lena Simet
    Oct 18, 2026

The World Bank has high hopes for the positive impact of AI. Its flagship World Development Report this year is even titled “The Promise of Artificial Intelligence.”

From its annual meetings in Bangkok through October 18 to the following week’s Global AI and Digital Summit in Seoul, the bank is promoting AI’s potential to deliver “more and better jobs.” But what would it take to make that promise real for workers?

Trump Is Plotting With the Tech Invaders Against Ordinary People

AI data centers are suddenly intruding into thousands of communities across America, sucking up people’s land, water, electricity, and democratic control. And the president is on the data centers' side.

    Jim Hightower
    Oct 18, 2026

To cope with the imminent danger posed by today’s arrogant, profiteering AI billionaires, President Donald Trump says the only thing America needs is a “STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT!”
