A short history of Mold

The town grew up around Bailey Hill, a Norman motte and bailey castle first recorded in 1146, which is now a public park holding a Green Flag Award. Mold’s parish church, St Mary’s, is Grade I listed: its nave dates from the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

In 1833 workmen digging a burial mound at Bryn yr Ellyllon, just outside the town, found the Mold gold cape, a Bronze Age ceremonial cape made around 1900 to 1600 BC. The original is in the British Museum, and Mold Museum on Earl Road has a replica.

In 1869 the town saw the Mold Riot, when soldiers fired on a crowd after a court case linked to Leeswood Green Colliery and four people were killed.

The novelist Daniel Owen (1836 to 1895), author of Rhys Lewis, Enoc Huws and Gwen Tomos and regarded as the national novelist of Wales, was born in Mold. His statue stands in the town, which also hosts the GΕ΅yl Daniel Owen festival in October.
