mean(平均値)だけを見ているなら、
median(中央値)です。
【Lucia’s One-Minute Column — Today’s Perspective —】
Focus of Today : median / mean
When we hear that “average income is rising,”
it sounds as if society is becoming wealthier.
However, if that figure refers only to the mean,
it may not reflect reality.
In a society where a small elite earns extremely high incomes,
the mean can be significantly skewed upward.
That is why economists often look at the median—
the exact midpoint of the income distribution.
Unlike the mean,
the median is less affected by outliers
and better represents the “typical” citizen.
If policies are based solely on averages,
decisions may drift away from lived reality.
At the Eiken Grade 1 level,
you are not only tested on vocabulary,
but on whether you can detect
what numbers might conceal.
----------
🌿 Gentle Closing Version
Statistics are not meant to deceive us.
But without understanding how they work,
we can misinterpret them.
The next time you see a number,
ask yourself:
Is this the mean, or the median?
That single question
changes the way you see society.
