English Version(Eiken Grade Pre-2)
Why Is "Makura no Sōshi" Still Read Today?
Makura no Sōshi was written in the Heian period about one thousand years ago.
Even today, students in Japan study this work, and researchers around the world read it.
Why has this book continued to be read for so long?
Makura no Sōshi is not a story about war or politics.
Sei Shōnagon wrote short notes about the scenes she saw, daily events, and things she thought were beautiful.
In the famous opening passage, she describes the most beautiful time of each season.
Spring is the dawn.
Summer is the night.
Autumn is the evening.
Winter is the early morning.
Such writing requires careful observation of nature.
In other words, Makura no Sōshi teaches us the importance of observing the world closely.
Today, artificial intelligence also observes large amounts of information and finds patterns.
In that sense, Sei Shōnagon’s method—
observe → record
—is similar to how knowledge is created today.
Perhaps this is one reason why this essay from a thousand years ago is still read today.
